We heard the Ondes Martenot in Honegger's oratorio Jeanne d'Arc au bûcher in class. Perhaps I should introduce its close cousin, the Theremin too.
Who knows, maybe we can include this 'solo instrument' in the concerto trial next year??
More on the Theremin here:

Wah! Really really beautiful sound, the sound is a bit like an analog synthesizer but with great tone color. Hope that there will be a live concert in Hong Kong and I think our school should have one.
ReplyDeleteMaybe our composition majors can have a choice between learning the theremin or singing in the choir ;)
ReplyDeleteTheremin is a very special instrument for me, in terms of the timbre and the playing techniques. I am wondering how can the player play the notes without any wrong pitches haha. Agree with Karen hope we can have in school and try that in our concerts :P

ReplyDeleteTheremin is not a common instrument for me. I think it is difficult to control the intonation. In the video, the soloist is amazing that she can play with nice tone and without any pitch problem. Theremin does't have a long history. It was invented in around 1920. It does't have a wide variety of repertoires comparing to other instruments. Our composition majors schoolmates may think of writing more misc for this instrument. smile emoticon
