In the past, Beethoven Symphony No.9 did not have much chances to be performed. But after Wagner conducting this masterpiece in Bayreuth Festival, it gradually became more popular that is chosen to be set piece in some celebration. People also arrange it into different versions.
When the gramophone record just came out, there were already different versions of symphony no.9. However, the first record presenting the whole music is that conducted by Oscar Fried. Then, in the single playing period, people put more focuses in the Felix Weingartner version as it gives more German style in performing this symphony.
However, it was actually hard to find the balance when recording this piece because the technique that time still could not be good that balance the quality and volume between the choir and the orchestra. Even when we are listening to symphony no.9 in live performance, the chorus need to be set in a suitable place so that the audience can listen clearly. Luckily, after going into the Hi-Fi period, the techniques is improved and it facilitates recording of this symphony.
In our daily life, it seems very easy for us to record some music. Nevertheless, we never thought of that recording an orchestral and chorus work with good quality is so hard. Beethoven really gave a big trouble to us!
