Words for conductors (from the view of a percussionist)
As a percussionist, the biggest struggle for me when playing an orchestra is having a conductor who conducts like the conductor above. But why do I feel struggle about it? In the video, don't the orchestra can also play on their own even the conductor is conducting in a confusing manner?
I do believe that orchestra should try their best to synchronise with the conductor, as this is the best way to help different parts of the orchestra interlock with each other, creating the sound that the composer has crafted. The clearest way to give the pulse to the orchestra is to give dots in the conducting actions. The nature of most of the percussion instrument is playing dots. If we could not read and understand the pulse of the conductor, how can we possible to synchronise with you or even playing music in an ensemble manner?
I am not saying that conductor should not conduct in a very dramatic way, but at least you should give out a clear pulse to the orchestra.
